DeCordova Event Space

Sego Design worked with Trustees’ staff to transform a former parking lot to event space for large gatherings and weddings. The space sits at a high point on the deCordova site, overlooking Sandy Pond and framed by large, mature oak trees. The original water source for Andy Goldsworthy’s artwork “Watershed” was rainfall sheet flowing off the asphalt parking lot. This impermeable area needed to be maintained, and a new concrete pad of the appropriate size would conveniently house a large event tent. The edges of the area were planted and softened with large repurposed granite blocks that had been stored on site for decades. These edge-planted areas protect visitors from the drop down to an encircling access road, which also serves to create openness and views to the surrounding oaks. Trustees staff Josh Hasenfus and Cindy Brockway used Trustees resources to complete the project.
